Can Cats Drink Coffee? Is It Harmful?

Cats are naturally curious creatures. When they see their owner sipping coffee, they may want to try it too. The smell of milk, cream, or sweetness can attract them, while plain black coffee usually does not. Sometimes a cat might lick from a forgotten cup out of curiosity — but is coffee safe for cats?

Is Coffee Toxic to Cats?

Coffee contains caffeine, which is not healthy for cats. While a small accidental lick is usually harmless, larger amounts can cause problems. Cats are more attracted to the cream or milk in coffee than the coffee itself. Without dairy, most felines won’t even approach it.

If your cat takes a few licks, don’t panic. Serious risks come only from high doses of caffeine — much more than a curious sip.

How Much Coffee Is Dangerous for Cats?

According to the American College of Veterinary Pharmacists, caffeine becomes toxic for cats at around 36–68 milligrams per pound of body weight.

  • One average cup of coffee contains about 46.5 mg of caffeine.
  • The average housecat weighs around 10 pounds, meaning it would need about 520 mg of caffeine to be at risk.
  • That equals more than 13 cups of coffee!

Even espresso (212 mg per shot) would require at least two full shots for toxicity, which no cat would drink willingly because of the bitter taste.

What To Do if Your Cat Drinks Coffee

  • If your cat only licked a little coffee with milk or cream — no need to worry.
  • If your cat somehow consumed a larger amount, especially black coffee, call your veterinarian immediately.

Conclusion: Can Cats Drink Coffee?

Cats should not drink coffee. While it usually takes an unrealistic amount to cause poisoning, even small doses of caffeine are not good for their health. If your cat is curious, keep cups out of reach and offer safer treats instead.
