🐾 How to Prepare Your Home for a Kitten

British Shorthair kitten arrives in his new home in Belgium – meeting his loving family

Bringing a British Shorthair or Longhair kitten into your family is an exciting and joyful moment. To make sure your new family member feels safe and happy, it’s important to prepare your home in advance. Here’s a simple guide from our cattery:

1. Safe and Quiet Space

Kittens may feel shy the first days in a new home. Prepare a small, quiet room where your kitten can stay at the beginning. Place the litter box, food, water, and a soft bed there. As the kitten feels more confident, you can allow them to explore the rest of your home.

2. Litter Box

  • Choose a low-entry box for easy access.
  • Use unscented clumping litter – kittens prefer a natural smell.
  • Place the box in a quiet corner, away from food bowls.

3. Food and Water

Your kitten is used to a natural BARF diet at our cattery (raw meat, balanced with vitamins and minerals). We recommend continuing the same diet, but high-quality dry food (such as Almo Nature or Grandorf) can also be available.

Always provide fresh, clean water – preferably in a ceramic or metal bowl.

4. Scratching Post and Toys

Kittens need to sharpen their claws and spend their energy.

  • Place a scratching post where your kitten can easily find it.
  • Provide toys: small balls, toy mice, and tunnels. Playtime helps to bond and keeps your kitten active.

5. Carrier

A safe and sturdy carrier is essential – for the trip home, visits to the vet, or travel. Choose one with good ventilation and easy-to-clean material.

6. Love and Attention

Our kittens grow up surrounded by people. They are used to sleeping in a bed, following us around, and being part of daily life. Please give them the same attention and love – they are happiest when they feel like part of the family.

💡 Tip from CDiamonds: Kittens should not be left alone for long hours in the first months. They are social, affectionate, and need interaction to grow into confident adult cats.

After all the preparations, the most rewarding moment comes — bringing your kitten home. 🏡💖
